Warning MS cumulative security update 918899

Update 922760 from Microsoft has been tested and it resolves the below mentioned problem.

Updated 2006-10-27 Two problems have now been identified as caused by this update:

1) IE 6 closes unexpectedtly. This is the error described below, and this can be resolved by either applying the hotfix, or uninstall the KB918899 update.

2) A javascrip error with 'Permission Denied' pops up when using the Layout Studio. This can only be resolved by uninstalling the KB918899 update.

It appears there are two ways of getting rid of the problem where Internet Explorer sometimes crashes using Sitecore after Microsoft KB918899 has been installed:
1) Uninstall the KB918899 update
2) Install the latest version of the 918899 Update, then apply the hotfix stated in the below mentioned article.

Please be aware that installing this update (918899) without the mentioned workaround may interfere with your use of Sitecore applications. To avoid this we strongly recommend that you do not install this update WITHOUT also applying the appropriate workarounds or hotfixes recommended by Microsoft for this issue.

Regarding uninstalling the KB918899

If you choose to uninstall the update you will likely experience that it is automatically installed again if your Windows Update is set up for this. If this is the case hereis a descriptin on how you can avoid this:

"Alternatively, if you have windows automatic update enabled you can download all updates and when prompted to install the updates you are given the option of “express install” or “custom install” choose “custom install” and uncheck 918899. Windows will ask if you would like to ignore this update in the future and you can say yes. Worked for me. This is accomplishing the same thing but through the windows automatic update interface instead of the windows update website. An added benefit is that windows doesn’t remind me about it at all."
