A link can be placed anywhere on a webpage. The text often includes a link to other content on the website or to web pages at another location (URL) on the Internet.
You can easily create a link either by inserting it into existing text, or creating it whenever you type text.
1. Insert Link Based on Existing Text
- Select the text which should be used as the link text.
-
Click the Insert Hyperlink toolbar button
to insert
a link, and a dialog box containg the link properties will open:
-
Fill out the URL at the top of the dialog box:
- If the link refers to another website, type in the address, for example: www.sitecore.net.
-
To create an internal link, the one which refers to the website
content, use the browse button to open the content tree and
select the proper content:
-
Select the link type from the list of options. The http://
selection is the most frequently used one.
Possible link type selections are:
"http://" - Select when linking to an external web source, such as www.sitecore.net, and an internal web source.
"https://" – Select when the destination uses a secure connection.
"ftp://" - Select if the link refers to a ftp folder on the server.
"news://" - Select if the link refers to a news server.
"mailto:" – Select when an email address is inserted into the text.
Note: this will use the locally installed email application on the visitor's client.
-
Please refer to the Administrator for further guidance if any questions arise.
-
The Title field specifies the help text you see when the mouse hovers over the link.
-
Use the class field when you need to define a specific formatting in the CSS style sheet.
-
The Target field specifies whether the linked content should be displayed in the current window, a new window, the topmost window, or the parent window, where the current window or a new window are the most frequently used ones. If the Target field is not set, the link will behave according to the default settings for the current page.
-
When done, click OK.
The link will appear in the text with appropriate link formatting (as blue and underlined, as it is shown below or following the formatting defined in a CSS style sheet).
Additional options exist in the link dialog for setting the link appearance and other features. These are for advanced users and will be described elsewhere.
2. Create a Link Without Initial Text
Creating a link in this way is, basically, the same as creating a link associated with the existing text. Only the start conditions differ.
Place the cursor where the link should be inserted.
- Place the cursor where the link should be inserted.
-
Click the Insert Hyperlink toolbar button
.
- Fill out the dialog box as described above (see steps 3-8).
Notice that the text created to represent the link will be the same as
the URL.
While this method may be appropriate for a simple
external address, such as www.sitecore.net, we shouldn’t use it for
internal links.
