Sitecore has identified issues with KB918899 and KB923996 released by Microsoft during the summer of 2006. These issues do not affect the Sitecore CMS server, only Internet Explorer browsers accessing Sitecore user interfaces. Updating to the latest from Microsoft may be needed on any machine accessing Sitecore.

While removing KB918899 resolves the issue most easily, any browser configuration error or missing updates could represent a security concern. Sitecore 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 users are advised to install updates from Microsoft. This problem is not specific to Sitecore – applying KB923996 may positively affect the performance of other web applications affected by this update from Microsoft.

To summarize the short-term solutions, remove KB918899 or install KB923996; a registry update may be required for Sitecore versions before 5.3.
