4.  KB923996 and Registry Update

Microsoft has released KB923996 to address an issue with KB918899 but has not made KB923996 a component of Windows Update. Be sure to install the version of KB923996 appropriate for the operating system. For Sitecore 5.1 and 5.2 with KB923996, a registry update may be required (5.3 is not known to require any registry update).

To obtain KB923996 for Windows XP, access http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.html?FamilyID=ff9bc431-01f3-48e8-9a58-d701d2e60c1d&DisplayLang=en. For other versions of Windows contact Microsoft using http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support and describe the symptoms experienced. Microsoft is not charging customers for this KB923996.

Ensure the machine has rebooted at least once since installing KB918899, then execute the KB923996 binary downloaded from Microsoft. Press Run:

If you agree to the license agreement, select I Agree and Next:

Do not selectthe Do not restart now checkbox; select Finish :

Ensure the machine reboots after installing KB923996.
