The Sitecore distributives consist of two setup executables, one intended for the Sitecore hosts (workstations or servers with ASP.NET and Sitecore installed which may also have Microsoft SQL Server installed) and one intended for database servers with only SQL Server installed. The setup executable for the database server ends with _db.

In some occasions Sitecore may be distributed as a .zip or other archive, or an organization may create an archive of their Sitecore solution to move it from one machine to another. Use of the setup executable can eliminate much of the manual effort required to configure the .zip distributive.
