Create a master document

Abstract

Use an existing document or a new document to create a master document that you can use as a template.

The master document contains all style settings, such as paragraph styles, character styles, page sizes, color definitions, and margins. Every document item in your project needs to have a master document assigned to it. A default master document is assigned to every new document unless another one has been specified.

To create a new master document in InDesign:

  1. In the Libraries panel, in the Master documents section, click the folder in which you want to create the new master document.

  2. Create a new InDesign document or open an existing document.

  3. Click Add an item.

  4. In the New master dialog box, enter the name of the new master and click OK. The InDesign document is now uploaded to the server and stored as a new master document in the libraries.

Warning

Avoid working with different InDesign versions. For example, once you save a master in CS6, you cannot open it in CS5.5.
